ACTIVITIES
The George Washington Carver OUTDOOR SCHOOL, Inc. is a non-profit, tax exempt, community based, health promotion, environmental awareness enrichment program that provides a variety of relevant, wholesome, and affordable outdoor experiences for youth, ages 7 - 17.

Our organization includes teachers, health professionals, environmental educators with over 40 years of camping experience.

Year-round outdoor activities include: community service projects, day trips, environmental hikes, weekend campouts, and a weeklong residential summer camp. We do both cabin and tent camping.
Our programs include the following activities:

Adventure Weekend
A 3day/2night tent camping experience filled with hiking, nature/health programs, and other activities, that are always fun and educational. This activity is the foundation upon which the OUTDOOR SCHOOL was built. This activity is designed for youth, 8 - 12 years of age.

This activity is conducted from April through October. This is a regularly scheduled program; where other organizations request this activity for their own group.

These adventure filled weekends include the Dogon Star Watch, the Dr. George Washington Carver Nature Walk, and the Underground Railroad Night Trek. Campers also participate in swimming, boating, and group activities.

Spring Environmental Camp
A 4day/3 night cabin camping activity that takes place during the Easter break.. Facilitators from public and private environmental agencies and organizations are invited to provide instruction on a variety of topics that are educational and fun. The program is designed for children between the ages of 8 to 12 years old. Children are grouped according to age and gender.

An orientation session that includes outdoor safety and nature awareness must be completed by both parent and participant prior to participation in this program.

Summer Mini-Camp
A fun filled educational 4 day/3 night cabin and tent camping experience.

Summer Camp is a collaborative effort involving partnerships with several private and public agencies and organizations. In addition, to cultural and historical re-enactment, nature and health awareness sessions are provided; as well as time for swimming, hiking, boating, and much more. Strong emphasis is placed on developing self-confidence and teamwork.

Both parent and child must attend the orientation session prior to the camp. Parents are encouraged to participate, and attend Family night.

Wilderness Weekend
A 3 day/2 night backpacking activity that takes place in the Fall. This weekend circular hike takes us along part of the Appalachian Trail. Since some outdoor experience is recommended, participants must be at least 13 years old, and have successfully competed an Adventure Weekend before being eligible to participate in the Wilderness Weekend.

There is at least one adult to every five campers, and each “expedition”, as they are called, is limited to 2 teams of ten (10) campers each.

Nature Knows” Educational Series
This program is an introduction to nature and health awareness through games and other interactive activities. The program is designed for elementary school children. This program is conducted on a year-round basis, and is available upon request. Weather permitting, this is primarily an outdoor program, and is best suited for a neighbor hood park, or nearby wooded areas.

The activities are cultural adaptations of Project Wild, Project Wet, Ranger Rick, and/or Project Learning Tree. The program takes approximately two (2) hours to complete. Children receive certificates upon completion of the program.

Dr. George Washington Carver Nature Hike
The OUTDOOR SCHOOL has partnered with the Smithsonian Institution, Anacostia Museum. We lead monthly Environmental Education Hikes on the Dr. George Washington Carver Nature Trail (adjacent to the Anacostia Museum). In addition, prior to the hike, the children view a film about the life and contributions of Dr. George Washington Carver. Reservations can be made by calling the Anacostia Museum.

Environmental Community Service Projects
High school students are given an opportunity to earn community service learning hours. The OUTDOOR SCHOOL participates in several national service day events: Earth Day, National Youth Service Day, Public Lands Day and Dr. Martin Luther King Service Day. In addition, our high school students are given numerous opportunities to gain additional hours as junior counselors during our Explorer activities.

Respect yourself, Respect others, and Respect NATURE.
